A reduction in force was recommended for the Galion City School District at the regular board of education meeting on Thursday, June 9. Because of financial problems caused by a levy repeal in November, the board says they were forced to abolish a number of teaching positions. Superintendent Denny Rose presented the union with the recommended list of layoffs last month, with the exception of a Title One and Art teaching position. Now, up to 14 people will be without jobs next school year due to the loss of the 800-thousand-dollars, which they will go after again in the August special election. Rose also recommended last night approving the tax abatement for Elliott Machine Works Incorporated. According to WBCO/WQEL, Elliott Machine Works has agreed to make quarterly cash contributions of nearly $3,000 dollars for the entire fifteen years of the abatement. Should the board not receive that amount, the City of Galion will curtail abatements and the board would revert back to receiving their share of property taxes. | ||
