Clinton Visit An Experience For Young, Old 03-03-2008

A rare visit from a former United States President was an experience for hundreds in the Marion area and beyond who braved the snow for a rally at Harding High School on Friday, February 29.

Students were bussed in from around the county to take part in the rally and many people waited outside in the cold and snow for a couple hours to get inside.

The event started on time, which was a surprise considering the weather, and began with an introduction by Marion Mayor Scott Schertzer. He echoed the thoughts of many in the audience by saying it was a once in a lifetime experience for him.

Longtime Ohio Senator and record-making astronaut John Glenn spoke first. He mentioned that Marion was the hometown of Mary Ellen Withrow, the only person to be Treasurer at all levels of government. She was made the United States Treasurer by Bill Clinton.

When Clinton began his speech, he mentioned that he didn't know Withrow would be making history with the appointment.

While not saying much that hasn't already been heard in the campaign, Clinton listed the reasons that votes should be cast for his wife, Hilary.

Following his speech, he made his way around the front of the stage, shaking hands and even holding a young girl for a photo.
