The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported today that Labor Day fatalities were down 42 percent from last year. Law enforcement agencies reported 13 fatal crashes, killing 14 people, from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday. Last year, 24 people were killed during a similar reporting period.
As part of the national Over the Limit. Under Arrest. campaign, which ran from August 15 through September 1, the Patrol arrested 1,691 motorists for OVI. During this holiday weekend alone, troopers removed 548 impaired drivers off Ohio roadways.
Half of the accidents involved motorcycles where 6 of the 7 people killed were using helmets. 3 of the 7 people killed in automobile accidents were wearing seat belts.
