Tax Cut Removal Passes House, May Stall In Senate 10-23-2009

The Ohio House of Representatives passed House Bill 318 yesterday 55-44. The bill calls for a delay in the last installment of the income tax reductions set forth in 2005, which would have equaled 4.2% for the 2009 tax year.

Republicans, including Marion Representative Jeff McClain, voted against the suspension.

The bill also calls for a 5% cut in salary for representatives which will take effect in 2011, since lawmakers cannot pass a salary change in the middle of a term.

An $851 million deficit in the budget was created when proposed slot machines were taken from Governor Ted Strickland by a judge who said the idea should go before voters.

The bill now moves on to the Senate for further consideration. Senate leaders have expressed that they are in no hurry to pass or even vote on the bill.
