There were two octagon-shaped, or as they were commonly called, eight-square, schools in early Morrow County built during the 1830's and 40's.  This shape was popular with the Quakers.  Florence Walker took this photo with a Brownie camera when it was being used as a storage shed.  The structure was razed in the 1920's.

mtgileadway_sh.jpg (40889 bytes)Mt. Gilead's White Way
In early Ohio the stage road which ran from Delaware to Mansfield passed through Williamsport.  A hotel was built in the late 1830's to accommodate travelers.  The 1857 Morrow County Map lists William Hopper as the proprietor, but by 1871 John S. Mitchell had acquired it and changed the name to the "Mitchell House".  It is now a private residence.  The photo is dated June 16, 1909.
